Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the health problems and physical activities of women with MHO (metabolically healthy obesity) and those with MUHO (metabolically unhealthy obesity) in Korea.

Methods : This study was a study of secondary analysis from the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, metabolic condition, health problems and physical activities of women. Multiple logistic regression was analyzed using a odds ratio (OR) to identify factors influencing health problems and physical activities in women with MHO.

Results : Women with MHO had lower waist measurement, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose level and neutral lipid level than those with MUHO, while they had a higher HDL-cholesterol level. Compared with women with MUHO, women with MHO were younger and their income level, education level, their perception and health condition were higher. In health problem, women with MHO had a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus (OR=2.96, CI=1.93-4.56), hypertension(OR=1.91, CI=1.40-2.59), hypertriglyceridemia (OR=16.35, CI=6.24-42.81) and osteoarthritis lumbar scale(OR=1.58, CI=1.06-2.36) than women with UMHO. In physical activity, women with MHO has a lower number of days of a flexibility exercise (OR=1.16, CI-1.07-1.24) than women with UMHO.

Conclusion: Nursing intervention for obesity women would need an approach according to metabolic condition, rather than obesity.
